Dessie Baxter serves as our Homeless Services Manager, bringing a deep-rooted passion for transforming lives through compassionate, community‑centered solutions. With more than 20 years of experience across nonprofit organizations and service‑driven agencies—including blood banking, elder care, and transitional housing—Dessie has dedicated her career to uplifting individuals and families in need.

As the former Executive Director of a transitional housing program, Dessie led the transformation of a dilapidated motel—once known for despair—into a beacon of hope. She built a comprehensive case management program that emphasized accountability, personal growth, and walking alongside individuals on their journey to restoration. Through collaboration with volunteers, city officials, and the faith community, she helped create a safe and supportive space where individuals could begin rebuilding their lives and envision a brighter future.

Originally from California, Dessie now calls Tennessee home. Her commitment to community engagement is reflected in her service on multiple boards promoting youth, wellness and empowerment. She spent over a decade as a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, earning the title of Ambassador of the Year in 2021.

Family is at the heart of Dessie’s journey. She and her husband, Ryan, have been together for 30 years and are proud parents to eight children, including four formerly homeless youths they welcomed into their home. Her personal and professional life reflect a shared mission of compassion, inclusion, and resilience.

Outside of work, you can find Granny Dessie obsessing over her six grandchildren. She also enjoys playing golf, whitewater rafting, all sports, and cheering on her Kansas City Chiefs. Her life’s work is rooted in giving back by volunteering, building community, and creating opportunities for others to thrive.
